Irrigation & Garden Watering Systems

Help with manual, automatic and smart watering systems, from maintaining and improving how they operate through to fault finding and repairs.

A watering system doesn’t need to stop working before it benefits from attention. Controller settings, seasonal changes, ageing components and how water is being delivered all affect how well the garden is watered.

Let’s make sure the water is getting to where it’s needed while reducing wastage.

Irrigation problems we can help with

  • garden or lawn areas that remain dry or are being overwatered
  • sprinklers or drippers not watering where they should
  • wet areas after watering, including persistent dampness, moss growth or water staining
  • controller setup, programming or error messages
  • upgrading controllers and adding smart watering features, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth control
  • sprinklers or parts of the watering system that won’t start, stop or operate correctly
  • leaks, sprinkler repairs and other damaged components
  • systems that work but don’t seem to be watering the garden effectively
  • faults that are difficult to find or keep returning
  • smart watering and flow-monitoring features that can help track water use and identify possible leaks or water-supply problems
  • smart controller setup and remote management where the system supports it
  • new irrigation systems, extensions or changes where the existing setup no longer suits the garden

Keeping up with a changing garden

As plants establish and mature, the way they need to be watered can change. New plants with small root systems may need more frequent watering, while established plants can often benefit from less frequent, deeper watering that encourages stronger, more resilient root systems.

New plantings, changed garden beds and other landscape alterations can also change where water needs to reach. Adjusting sprinklers and other parts of the system can help keep water reaching where it is needed as the garden changes.

Controller programs and watering times can also be adjusted as the garden develops, helping keep watering appropriate to the garden as it is now rather than how it was when the system was originally set up.

Smart controllers can also provide weather-based watering adjustments, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth control and remote access. Where compatible flow monitoring is available, water use can also be monitored to help identify unusual usage, possible leaks or changes in water supply.

Where supported, remote management can make it easier to monitor and adjust watering as conditions and garden requirements change.

Gardens don’t usually need to be kept constantly wet. Where appropriate for the plants and conditions, allowing some drying between watering can encourage stronger root development rather than plants becoming dependent on frequent shallow watering.

When you see water running off your garden or lawn, the solution may be as simple as changing the watering program to give the area enough time to absorb the water before more is applied, or improving the soil’s ability to absorb water. But it can also point to other issues that need investigating.

For mature gardens, the goal is not necessarily to maximise growth. In many situations, maintaining healthy, balanced growth is more useful than encouraging excessive growth that creates unnecessary pruning, mowing and maintenance.

Finding the cause when something isn’t right

A visible symptom isn’t always the main cause and can sometimes be the result of a different problem elsewhere in the system.

Controllers, wiring, valves, sprinklers, pipework and other components all work together. Fault finding starts with understanding what is happening, then deciding the best way to investigate the underlying cause and repair the problem.

This can be particularly valuable where a problem has been difficult to identify or keeps returning.

Current client work includes ongoing irrigation management within display-home gardens, where system operation and garden performance are managed together.
